Our History
Our Philosophy
We believe wrestling is an investment in your entire life journey. Wrestling teaches an athlete to work hard, persist, and overcome adversity. It can be a team sport, but the focus is always on the individual. When you’re out on the mat, it is you and your opponent, and that’s it. When you win, it is a direct result of the work you did in the practice room, and the mentality you bring to the match. Wrestling creates champions at life. Losses happen too, and that’s part of life. When we lose, we don’t get discouraged. We shake our opponent’s hand, learn from it and keep trying. Wrestling teaches you to lose without failing. The drive, work ethic, physical and mental toughness and tenacity developed in wrestling will go with athletes wherever they go in life and can only help them to be their best in any endeavor. Welcome to the beginning of your wrestling journey!
Balancing Winning and Fun
Wrestling is a very demanding and physically and mentally challenging sport. Losing matches isn’t necessarily very fun. However, it is part of the process. Every wrestler will lose matches. With every loss, we reflect, we learn, and we get better. Winning comes with experience and work. While winning is the goal of any sport, and it is certainly something we strive for and celebrate, it is important to make sure that having fun and enjoying the process exists also. Wrestlers who put too much pressure on winning and being a champion, especially at an early age, tend to burn out. Kids who win State and compete heavily on a national level can often burn out and quit wrestling before they get to high school. It is our goal to encourage each athlete to find that balance for themselves. We’d rather see an athlete go on to compete in high school, and even college, than to pique at an early age and quit. So it our goal to incorporate fun, games, and team building into the wrestling experience at South Reno Wrestling.
